CARNIVAL TRAGEDY KILLS 17, INJURES 32
Thursday, April 2nd, 2009
MURFREESBORO, TN - A white 250' ferris wheel broke free yesterday afternoon from the fairgrounds at Stones River Mall, 30 miles southeast of Nashville.
Authorities said the ferris wheel broke loose when 19-year-old operations manager Bubba Holiday fell asleep intoxicated at the piston management station which controlled the operation for the ride.
Witnesses described a blaring high-pitched sound just before the ride broke loose, rolling quickly onto nearby Old Fort Pkwy into oncoming traffic.
20-year-old mother of four Bobbie Houston said of the tragedy, "I just couldn't believe my two eyes. I yelled for my babies to move out of the way and just stood there and watched. There was nothing I could do but yell."
7-year deputy-sheriff Buck Walker of the Murfreesboro Police Department was the first on the scene. "I didn't know what to do. In all of my years as a law enforcement officer I have never seen anything as unusual as this," Walker said of the accident.
With the wheel's 15 cars at maximum occupancy, it broke free from its inverted "T" shape frame and immediately advanced towards the highway breaking through several parking-lot medians in addition to several trees. The wheel collided onto the road hitting several vehicles and an ambulance.
24-year-old Vixy Duke, senior operations manager of the fairgrounds, was off-site when the incident occurred. "I just stepped away for a minute to talk to my cousin," Duke explained. "I don't know why everyone is calling me and such. It's not my fault," said Duke of the incident, blaming Holiday instead as the cause of the tragedy.
17 people were killed in the incident with an additional 32 respective passengers and motorists injured. Damages are estimated at $560k with ongoing investigations.
